Sheesham is also referred to as Indian Rosewood. Native to India, Pakistan and Nepal, it is primarily found growing along river banks and is best known internationally as a premier timber species of the Rosewood genus. Sheesham is among the finest ornamental timbers and makes spectacular chess pieces!
Boxwood is a favorite with woodcarvers because it takes fine detail. It is a dense wood that is so heavy it hardly floats. In 15th century Europe, Boxwood was widely used for engraving and printing. It was also believed to be the best wood for making molds since it could be intricately carved and would retain the details of the design. It remains a popular choice for wood sculptures and carvings today.
Walnut has been a popular ornamental wood because of its durability, beauty, and smoothness to the touch. Walnut has a mostly straight grain and polishes to a high sheen.
Some Maple species have valuable timber, particularly Sugar Maple in North America, and Sycamore Maple in Europe. Sugar Maple wood, often known as "hard maple", is the wood of choice for musical instruments and makes beautiful chess pieces and chess boards. |
