Ebony heartwood is one of the most intensely black woods, which, combined with its very high density (it is one of the very few woods that sink in water), fine texture, and ability to polish very smoothly, has made it very valuable as an ornamental wood. Ebony has a long history of use, with carved pieces having been found in Ancient Egyptian tombs!
Boxwood is a favorite with woodcarvers because it takes fine detail. It is a dense wood that is so heavy it hardly floats. In 15th century Europe, Boxwood was widely used for engraving and printing. It was also believed to be the best wood for making molds since it could be intricately carved and would retain the details of the design. It remains a popular choice for wood sculptures and carvings today. |
